This task is based on the Forced-Choice Procedure from Hiscock & Hiscock (1989), and is intended to give an indication of possible suboptimal performance on a memory task (malingering). It consists of 3 blocks with 24 trials (but these parameters can be adjusted). A trial consists of a screen with a target number of 5 digits, followed by a retention interval and a response screen with two numbers (the target and a distractor). Task is to indicate which of the 2 numbers was also shown in the first part of the trial. The first and last digit of the distracting number always differs from that of the target number. Remembering the first digit of the target number is therefore sufficient for a good response. The retention interval increases per block (from 5 seconds to 15 seconds, but can also be adjusted), whereby the participant is told that the interval is prolonged because “you performed so well in the previous block”. The numbers can be randomly generated (different for each participant) or fixed from a list. The response mode can be set to mouse click, touch screen, cursor keys (left / right), or to the external button box. As a cutoff point for malingering, the chance level is used, although there is some discussion in the literature about the adequacy of this.
